COAT OF ARMS

A coat of arms is a type of symbolic design originally found on things such as a shield or outerwear. Originating in Europe in the 12th century, medieval knights would wear coats of arms to identify themselves in battle or tournaments. The images used in coats of arms in the Middle Ages often denoted things like family or national pride or loyalty to a royal bloodline.
